Project

The wharf project is designed to meet three objectives:

  • stabilize the existing wharves;
  • provide the aluminum smelter with harbour facilities that are adapted to the scope of its operations, including the expected increase in production capacity and wharf activity following the modernization project;
  • upgrade Alcoa’s harbour facilities to remain in sync with the evolution of maritime transportation. The main goal is to adapt the facilities’ berthing capacity to meet the clearance requirements of the vessels carrying alumina. Indeed, the maritime market is evolving to include Supramax and Panamax class vessels that can measure up to 250 metres, while the existing wharves are currently designed to accommodate vessels no longer than 165 metres. Alcoa plans to accommodate Supramax class vessels.
