Description

The project comprises three components:

  • Reconstruction of the harbour facilities

Rockfill works will be conducted at the three existing wharves to stabilize their structure. The wharves will no longer be used for harbour operations, and only the new wharf will be functional once the construction works have been completed.

  • Construction of a new multifunctional wharf

Alcoa has decided to build a new wharf so as to definitely solve the problem of the harbour facilities. This wharf (no. 4) will be located in the extension of existing wharf no. 1. It will be 245 metres long by 50 metres wide, and will also serve as a breakwater. Its north berth will have the capability of accommodating Supramax class vessels, while its south berth will accommodate smaller vessels.

  • Dredging and disposal of sediments

Given the size of the vessels expected to use the facilities, specific works will be required to deepen the north berth. A depth of 14 meters is needed to accommodate Supramax vessels. According to current estimates, 59 000 cubic meters of sediment will have to be removed to reach this depth.

Sediment treatment and disposal options are currently the object of discussions with the provincial and federal government authorities.

Rehabilitation of Anse du Moulin

In parallel to the wharf project, Alcoa has committed itself to providing a sustainable environmental solution to the contamination issue encountered at Anse du Moulin. Discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parcs (MDDEP) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) regarding a rehabilitation program.
