The replacement of the Söderberg cells with prebake cells will allow the plant to meet and exceed new environmental standards that come into force in 2015.

The project is based on the three following incentives :

• Environnement
  • Meeting future emission standards by replacing the Söderberg series (A, B and C) with a new series using a prebake technology that is more advanced, particularly in regard to emissions
• Sustainability
  • To maintain long-term employment opportunities and enhance the performance of the existing prebake technology cells
• Plant production capacity
  • To increase production from 440 000 t/yr to 550 000 t/yr by the end of 2015
