Announced on March 4, 2008, in the presence of Québec Premier Jean Charest, the modernization of the Alcoa aluminum smelter in Baie-Comeau notably includes the permanent shutdown of the Söderberg cells (series A, B and C) and their replacement by cells using a technology that will meet the new environmental standards that come into force in 2015.
Thus, the smelter’s production capacity will be increased by 25% to 550 000 t/yr.
Once it has been modernized, the plant will generate economic spin-offs valued at $470 million per year, bringing the company’s total economic spin-offs in the province to almost $2 billion per year. The modernized plant will support over 3 900 jobs, directly and indirectly.
Roughly 6 800 job-years will be created in the construction sector by 2014, which will generate $540 million in economic spin-offs.
“This mega-project is a formidable tool for regional development.”
