Biography of Yves ChâtelYves Châtel is project manager on Alcoa Canada Global Primary Products' $1.2 billion Baie-Comeau Smelter modernization project. Yves Châtel has over 30 years of experience in the aluminum, mining and metallurgy, and refinery industries. He began his career as construction manager at Québec Cartier Mining Company (now Arcelor Mittal) before joining SNC Lavalin, where he worked as area manager and later construction manager. In 1994 he founded DEVONYX, a private engineering and project management company. He served as vice president of the company until 2005, working on large-scale industrial development projects in the aluminum and magnesium industries. When he joined Alcoa in 2005, Mr. Châtel was first assigned to a joint project with Alcan (now Rio Tinto Alcan) to commission an alumina refinery in Guinea, West Africa. Once the design phase of the project was complete, Mr. Châtel was assigned to the Baie-Comeau Smelter modernization project, which he has been managing since 2008. His responsibilities include running a 70-person team and supervising 20 Quebec engineers dedicated exclusively to the project. The team will be growing with each successive phase to ensure that the project is completed on time and on budget while respecting the environment and the local community. Mr. Châtel has a bachelor's degree in engineering from École Polytechnique de Montréal and a master's degree in project management from Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. He is a member of Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec and the Montreal chapter of the Project Management Institute. When not tending to his professional duties, Mr. Châtel is active in the Côte-Nord and Laval-Laurentides regional chapters of Association Québécoise des Techniques de l'Eau. |
