Impact assessment

The environmental impact assessment applies a rigorous methodology to evaluate the significance of the project's impacts on the environment and on public health and safety, and identifies measures to mitigate or compensate for negative impacts. Initiated in March 2009, the assessment was completed in December 2009. (The study or the assessment findings?? will be made public)

Positive impacts:

  • Environment

    • Meet future emission standards by replacing the Söderberg series (A, B and C) with a new series using prebaked technology that is more efficient emissions-wise

    • Reduce atmospheric emissions (namely PAHs, fluorides, dust, and greenhouse gases)

    • Increase energy efficiency

  • Sustainability

    • Maintain long-term employment opportunities and enhance the performance of existing prebaked cells

  • Plant production capacity

    • Maintain the annual production capacity of the modernized plant at about half a million metric tonnes

  • Economic impacts

  • Consolidation of jobs at the Alcoa smelter in Baie-Comeau

Main impact concerns:

Construction phase:

  • Noise and dust from construction work and heavy vehicle traffic

  • Demolition waste materials
